Kamal Hassan turns 56

National award winning actor and Tamil film icon Kamal Hassan turned 56 on Sunday. He had celebrated his 50th year in cinema last year.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi greeted him and said the actor has attained a pride of place and pinnacle of glory in Tamil film industry.

In his message to the actor, Mr. Karunanidhi wished him an ever-growing place in the Tamil film industry.

“You have already proved to be a real wizard of artistic talents,” Mr. Karunanidhi said.

The actor secured his first National Film Award in 1982 for his role in Moondram Pirai.

Distribution of financial aid, assistance to the needy and down-trodden marked the birthday celebrations of the actor in Chennai today.

As part of the birthday celebration, the Padmashree awardee presented various articles to people, including laptop to students, uniforms to autorickshaw drivers and tailoring machines to the poor.

The four time National Film Award winner, who has acted in about 150 films in various languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi, has played a myriad of roles in his five decade-long career. In Dasavataram, he played 10 characters.

Whether it be the role of Palakkad-based Brahmin in Michael Madana Kamarajan or the the rustic villager in Virumaandi, he is known for giving life to characters, right from body language to pronunciation.

Kamal Hassan is also a screenwriter, songwriter, playback singer, and choreographer. His film production company, Rajkamal International, has produced several of his films.

According to reports, Kamal Hassan is currently engaged in a film titled Manmadhan Ambu, which is directed by K.S. Ravikumar.

He is turning a lyricist and singer in this film, which also features Trisha, Madhavan, Ramesh Arvind in key roles.

Shruti Haasan in Malayalam

Sources in the Kollywood say that Shruti Hassan has decided to star in a Malayalam film. Director TK Rajiv Kumar, who had directed Kamal Haasan in Chanakyan, is working on a script titled Thalsamayam oru Penn Kutty. He had approached Shruti to play the lead role in the film and when the lady heard the storyline, she was so impressed that she has decided to allocate dates for the film says a report.

Although the actress enjoys commercial success, she still clamors for performance oriented roles that challenges her as an actor.Nayantara gave a wonderful performance in the movie “Simha’ and she is ready to take up similar projects. Most of the A-listed actresses of Tollywood do not have much diversity in their roles, directors like to play it safe and turn them into eye candy for the audience. Right now it seems that Box office queen Anushka is playing safe with “Ragada’. Most of the actresses get tired of the same roles over time and want some variety in their films.Actress Sneha Ullal said that she wants to experiment with different roles so did not embark on a signing spree right after “Simha’ became a huge hit. Right now Sneha is trying her luck in the Tamil films. The actresses claim that the audience usually follows the male protagonist throughout the course of most films and heroines are only reserved for the glam quotient. I had play with Genliza D'souza: Katha Hero Arun

Hyderabad boy Arun, may have made a promising debut with Katha opposite Genelia D’Souza, but the 20-something photographer-turned-actor says he is still trying to find his foothold in the industry. The young actor claims he took to showbiz because he was never cut out for a “nine-to-five job.”


After completing my journalism degree, I got hooked to theatre and took up professional photography soon after. After I was called to audition for Inidhu Inidhu, the Tamil version of Happy Days, there was no looking back. I bagged a role in Katha too, which happened to release first,” says Arun, who couldn’t be happier that he got to debut with Genelia D’Souza.

“It was a great opportunity for me. Genelia is a sweetheart. We’d both play pranks on the sets. She is so energetic and playful,” he adds.

The young actor may have made a killer start, but he claims he is still treading cautiously. “It would be too arrogant for me to say I am choosy, but I am exploring a few projects with care,” adds Arun, who is not worried about the fact that he doesn’t have a filmy background. “Opportunities come your way easily these days. But yes, my family still foots my bills. My struggle is with myself at the end of the day,” he adds.

Arun also has a plan B in place, in case things don’t work out. “I would love to do the whole dance-fight routine on screen for the next 15-20 years. But if not for acting, I’d be writing. I was an avid blogger previously, but had to stop after I took to the public life.”
